Sofia Abrego

Sofia is a PhD student in the ALMA Lab studying quantum materials, superconducting circuits, and low-temperature physics. She graduated with honors from Dartmouth College in 2026 with a B.A. in Engineering Physics.

Her research examines the physical mechanisms that limit the performance of quantum hardware, particularly two-level system (TLS) defects and other sources of loss in superconducting devices. At Dartmouth, she worked on quantum materials and TLS-related phenomena using microwave characterization techniques and cryogenic measurements. She also developed experimental hardware and gained extensive experience in the machining and fabrication of research devices.

She is interested in building better quantum systems. Her work is motivated by questions surrounding decoherence and control in superconducting circuits, as well as the role of materials and device design in determining quantum performance. She combines experimental techniques with theoretical modeling of quantum systems, including open quantum systems and light-matter interactions.
