
Aziza Almanakly is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Her research in the nascent field of quantum engineering focuses on controlling quantum systems of superconducting circuits. Her group aims to advance microwave quantum optics to expand the potential of quantum information technology.
Almanakly leads a research team investigating waveguide quantum electrodynamics (wQED) with superconducting qubits, with the overarching goal of creating scalable quantum networks for distributed quantum computation and simulation. During her doctoral studies, she developed a chiral quantum interconnect that uses directional photons to generate remote entanglement. She also pursued experiments in quantum sensing and driven-dissipative remote entanglement generation using superconducting qubits.
She earned her Ph.D. (2025) and S.M. (2022) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a member of the Engineering Quantum Systems (EQuS) group. She was the 2026 recipient of the Jin-Au Kong Doctoral Thesis Award for the outstanding PhD thesis in electrical engineering. Her graduate studies were supported by the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, the Clare Boothe Luce Fellowship for Graduate Women, and the Alan L. McWhorter Fund Fellowship. She received her B.E. (2020) in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.
